Could it have been avoided? Maybe. I took them in (along with my son's neuro psychologist) and we had a meeting with the teacher and principal. One of our Grandsons is in to this big time so for him this was a great choice he was happy. If they did not make such a big issue of the measure being quantitative I would not have become so disillusioned with the book at such an early stage. It chronicles a couple's relationship, showing both the good and the bad that everyone in a long-term relationship has experienced.
Not only that, you also get to witness the protagonists experiencing events that have greatly shaped the lesbian community, such as the first lesbian character on tv, family reactions to their relationship, and the recent acceptance of same-sex marriage by state's legislature. I was very glad to have been able to get this in time for the 2010 New Year holiday.
It took me about 7 hours to work through the book, split over two days.
