In “Better Latitude,” the grandfather’s mistress (“He loved us the same way people like him love pedigree dogs, expensive cars, time-shares in Acapulco”) tries to shield their son from Mexico’s version of strange fruit while deciding whether they should leave, too, because her child carries his father’s name. There are no major surprises but it's nice to see love conquer all. What he finds out in the process of filming is totally not what he expected.
This was a great coming-of-age novel told through a teenage boy's perspective. There isn't anything I could not take from this book that I could not find in my fluid mechanics text books or the user guide of the CFD program I used. The actual story portrays the harsh realities the POWs faced in real life as opposed to the heroics of Steve McQueen in the movie.
